I'm hoping it picks up sooner rather than later because right now it just feels like a standard shooter. I just tried playing it and I made it 20 minutes before I had to quit, I was able to play the first game for like 4 hours in one session. I get that maybe I'm posting this a bit too early since like I said I'm only an hour and a half in but that's just how bad the game has been for me so far. The first game, sure I think that's pretty damn good even by today's standards but man, the second has just been a proper slog so far. Right now I seriously can't understand the praise for it at all. Hopefully I'll pick up a shotgun soon because I'm getting seriously tired of a week sounding/feeling pistol and machine pistol. I miss the auto aim-ish shooting of the first game and the gunplay in general feels less fun to me. Where are the cool alien things like the zappy guys or the weird dog things? I've come across a couple of headcrabs who are more annoying now since they're a lot more fluid in their movement and the weird tongue things which I guess are a welcome return but enemy variety so far is really bad. Or you have the manhacks which again are annoying to go up against as all they do is charge at you and you just shoot straight ahead to deal with them. Every enemy seems to be a fucking guy with a gun who are just annoying to go up against, they all stand on walls above you or really far away from you and just shoot and drip your life off you. The lack of a lab environment like Black Mesa is a shame as I really liked that in Half Life 1 and based on what I've seen so far I can't imagine an environment as cool as the cliffy bit in the 1st game or the place where you launch the satellite. The environments so far have been very boring compared to what you got in 1 and I feel there's been less puzzle solving and platforming which were some of my favourite things in the first game.
Half Life 2 unfortunately has a large array of things that I just don't like about it. I've been playing both games for the first time and Half Life 1 while flawed in certain ways and with an absolute garbo last few chapters is a much much more enjoyable game than 2 based on what I've played. I'm about an hour and a half in at the "Water Hazard" chapter I think and so far this game is much worse than Half Life 1 and a real disappointment.
